Hybridizer David Vincent Saunders (1894-1974)
Cottonwood, British Columbia, Canada
Participation of David Saunders in the AIS membership campaign in 1953, in which he won 3rd prize as indicated in a write-up of the Annual Meeting in the January 1954 Bulletin of the A.I.S. suggests a desire on the part of members from the centre of things to be an active part of the Society. A reference to Mr. Saunders in the April 1965 CIS Newsletter stated tha the had retired to Smithers, B. C. and that he was a figure of great importance in the iris world, a recognized authority on the "species". Mr. Saunders made his debut in 1953 with Cariboo, from 'Birkley Blue' X Onco seedlings , two-toned blue violet and 'Nacheko' a red violet bitone from 'Lothario' x 'Mulberry Rose'. He remained a member of the A.I.S. until the mid-sixties. In 1965 Mr. Saunders joined the Canadian Society and remained a member for several years .(CIS newsletter v26 no 2)
