Hybridizer Gertrude Songer (1914-2006)

San Juan Bautista, CA

Gertrude S. McDonald was born on September 25, 1914 in Buffalo, Wyoming to John & Mabel (Winger) Songer. She died at a St. Helens, Oregon nursing home on April 2, 2006 at the age of 91. She received her Master Degree in Teaching at the University of Arizona. He first teaching job was in a one room country school in Blue, Arizona. She also taught in Bisby & Tombstone, Arizona. She also taught in Hollister, CA. and she retired from San Juan Bautista, CA. in 1980.

She was married to William McDonald in Bisby, Arizona, he preceded her in death in 1982. She moved to St. Helens, OR in 1999 to be closer to family. She was a member of the Methodist denomination. Alumni Association of University of Arizona and the American Iris Society. Her special interests included a fondness for animals and strays, and avid flower (Iris) gardener, hiking and her nieces & nephews.

Survivors include: Sister: Mildred Mickey of St. Helens; Nephew: Robert P. Mickey of Scappoose; Nieces: Mildred MacWilliams of St. Helens; Rose Awtrey of Blue, AZ.; Patsy Milner of Phoenix, AZ.; Kacey Cullen; Kathleen Rowsell both of Australia. Great nieces & nephews. She was preceded in death by 2 sisters: Katharine Lee in '95 and Helen Cullen in '02.
