The information include within this page and its links captures the various awards and recognition presented by the American Iris Society (AIS) for this particular year. Annual Garden Awards of AIS are the results of accredited judges’ evaluations of garden grown irises seen by the judges and voted on. Annual popularity recognitions, Convention Cups, also summarized here, are voted on by the AIS National Convention attendees having visited the convention tour gardens as part of each annual AIS National Convention. From its origination in 1947, a recognition, the Presidents' Cup, thru its name change in 1956 to the Franklin Cook Memorial Cup, was awarded to the best introduced Iris seen at a convention with no regional origination distinction.
From the minutes of the November 1965 AIS Director’s Meeting in New Orleans, LA: It was voted to activate an award in the form of a cup to be awarded the best iris seen at a convention produced by a hybridizer within the Region. The Franklin Cook Memorial Cup will be restricted to the best iris seen at a convention produced by a hybridizer outside the host Region.
From this, in 1966, the Franklin Cook Memorial Cup was assigned to the best outside the host Region Iris and this new award, named the President's Cup, was assigned to the best inside the host Region Iris.
