The Judges' Choice

The Judges' Choice recognition was started in 1953 and the story of how it came about is at The Judges' Choice article from the April 1954 AIS Bulletin along with the first listing. The Judges' Choice balloting and voting continued through 1978, elimination effective in 1979 as an AIS financial decision due to the cost of mailing the ballot.

The Fred and Barbara Walther Cup Award began in 1968 for the top iris of the Judges' Choice List. 'Laurie' a Tall Bearded Iris by Larry Gaulter was the first iris to be recognized with the Walther Cup. 'Ann Chowning', a Louisiana Iris, was the last iris to be awarded the Walther Cup via the Judges' Choice balloting. When the Judges' Choice ended in 1978 the Walther Cup award was then awarded to the iris with the greatest number of votes in the Honorable Mention (HM) award balloting.

So from 1968 through 1978 there were both Judges' Choice and Walther Cup Awards from the Judges' Choice ballot voting.
