Nomenclature

Nomenclature is essentially the practice of naming.

Irises fall under two codes of naming:

Botanical Nomenclature
Horticultural Nomenclature.

Each has sets of rules that have been created by the world's botanists and horticulturalists respectively

Botanical Nomenclature

For references to accepted botanical names one may check with:
- The World Checklist of Selected families maintained by Kew
- The International Plant Names Index
Rules for naming Species (International Code of Botanical Nomenclature (ICBN))

Horticultural Nomenclature

For references to accepted Horticultural names
- The World cultivar registration authority for Iris (AIS registration)
Rules for naming Cultivars (International Code of Nomenclature for Cultivated Plants)
- Notes for registrars
