1973, Eeden

'George' (P. B. Eeden, 1973). Section Hermodactyloides. 3 ¼ -5 ¼" (8,5-13 cm). Flowers 2 ½ -3 ¼" (6-8 cm) in diameter. Bloom season = Early to mid February (zone 6), The first named variety to bloom. Standards plum-purple (RHS 79c) falls somewhat darker veined dark purple, blotch yellow on whitish ground, striped purple. (Iris histrioides (G.F. Wilson) S. Arnott var major Grey X 'J. S. Dijt')--KAVB.

Named in honor of George Rodionenko
It received an Award of Merit as a hardy plant for flower on the rock garden or in the alpine house by the Royal Horticultural Society. They provide the following description in their proceedings; "Leaves hardly showing at flowering (only 3-4 cm above the soil surface). Flowers about 15 cm tall. Falls spathulate, 58 x 25 mm, obtuse, apex deflexed, deep reddish purple (near 79A-B, but a bit redder), with a central orange yellow midrib bordered on either side with a strongly spotted band of white; on the deflexed part the spotting shades to a deep blue at its edges. Standards erect, 62 x 12,5 mm, reddish purple (78A-B). Styles 56mm long, deeply bilobed at apex, the lobes very shallowly toothed, reddish purple (78A-B)." Iris histrioides (G.F. Wilson) S.
