(MTB) 'Joseph's Coat'
According to the 1939 checklist this is a synonym for the proper name
'Kaleidoscope', See
Joseph's Coat Katkameir, but these were different Irises. The error in the 1939 checklist allowed the re-use of the name Joseph's Coat and unfortunately a Louisiana Iris was given that name. To try to compensate the original Joseph's Coat was renamed 'Joseph's Coat Katkameir'. The names 'Joseph's Coat' and 'Kaleidoscope' should not be considered synonyms see reference below.

1932 Katkamier catalog notes: "JOSEPH'S COAT. Bud sport of Honorabile. It has a varying color habit with combinations of white, maroon, violet, yellow, and lilac. Intensely interesting. $5.00" note sometimes confused with 'Kaleidoscope' the same catalog gives: "KALEIDOSCOPE. Bud sport of Honorabile. It has a habit of breaking up the maroon color of the falls into stripes, stipples, blotches, and other formations of maroon and yellow. I have examines literally thousands of falls of this bud sport and no two of them have the same color pattern. By shaking the colored glass of a kaleidoscope you change the design. Hence this new sport is appropriately given the name "Kaleidoscope." .50" |
