About Us Membership Plant Sale Seed Sale ASI Library
Arils, or aril irises, are wild bearded iris species found in semi-arid to desert climates from Central Asia to the Middle East. Aril irises get their name from the creamy white collar (or "aril") on their seeds. Despite their desert heritage some arils are successfully grown in places like Germany and Michigan. The term "aril" also applies to hybrids between any aril species.

Arilbreds, or arilbred irises, are the result of breeding arils with the more commonly grown bearded irises from Europe. The arilbreds are diverse in color and form and size, and therefore are a fun and exciting choice for your garden. Arilbreds will grow well wherever traditional bearded irises grow.

Each year the judges of the American Iris Society select the best irises in each class. Those award winning arils and arilbreds receive an actual medal based on the percentage of their aril ancestry. (See below.)

The Aril Society operates independently of the American Iris Society and is considered a cooperating society. Each group has its own membership dues. The big membership benefits for ASI are our annual seed sale & plant sale.

Many of our members participate on the on-line robin called ARILROBIN. Some members host display gardens open to the public. And other members have commercial nurseries selling our favorite irises.

CLOSED FOR 2015

This timeline roughly outlines the Plant Sale progress from month to month. Specific deadlines vary from year to year and are established by the co-chairs. Participation is open to members only. Profits are used to supplement the cost of the ASI Yearbook.

In spring donors submit their plant lists to the co-chairs. These lists are compiled into a catalog which is mailed out to all members in June. The catalog typically contains a few hundred cultivars and dozens of color photos.

These cultivars are always a good mix of arils & arilbreds, quarterbreds, halfbreds, historics, pure species, new introductions, and even unregistered seedlings. Deadline for receiving orders is usually in early-to-mid July. Deadline for receiving donations is usually in late July.

Dell Perry is a co-chair. Orders and general inquiries should be addressed to her James Washington is a co-chair in charge of shipping. Donors should contact him at Seedling 'PT9929' photo by Patricia Toolan. 'Sizzle' photo by Nancy Groshong.

This timeline roughly outlines the Seed Sale progress from month to month. Specific deadlines vary from year to year and are established by the chairman. Participation is open to members only.

The rules for the seed exchange are as follows:
  • All members of ASI are allowed to take part in the seed exchange.
  • The seed will be sold for $2.00 per portion. A portion would as a minimum include 5 seeds.
  • Donors have first priority to choose seed until two weeks after the seedlist has been published.
  • Donors are allowed to get five portions of seed free of charge.
  • Non-donors have second priority to the seed (two weeks after the seedlist has been published).
  • Orders are treated as first come, first served. Payment for seed and postage will go to the treasurer.
All kinds of aril seed are welcome, including seed from open-pollinated seedpods. Please use the following notation when you mark the seed portions you donate:
  • OP = Open pollinated
  • HP = Hand pollinated
  • CW = Collected wild
Please tell us what kind of aril or arilbred plant, too, using the standard notation: O, OH, OG, RC, R, RH, OB+, OGB+, RB+, OB, OGB, RB, OB-, OGB-, RB-.

If you are using your own code (many hybridizers are), please tell me about your code.

No portion of seed is too small!!!!

The deadline for sending seed to the seed exchange program is September 15. If your seed is not ready at that time, please send me a note telling me what you are expecting to donate.

Put all your marked envelopes (for example 11cm x 16cm) in a larger envelope and send your donation to me:
