■ (SPEC) Iris carterorum

1975, botanical authors Mathew & Wendelbo

'Carterorum' (Brian Mathew and Per Wendelbo, 1975, Eastern Afghanistan); Subgenus Scorpiris. Juno; 7-10 cm); Yellowish flowers spotted black. 4 well-developed leaves at flowering time. The lower two leaves 14 cm long by 2.4 cm wide. The two upper leaves smaller, strongly falcate, grey green, papillose-puberulent, with narrow white margins. Flower yellowish-green heavily spotted purple black in lower parts; Falls 3.5-3.7 cm long with a .7 cm long yellow, serrulate crest. Standards .4 cm long bristle-like. Styles 2.8-3 cm long with to 1 cm long lobes. Seeds arillate. Mathew notes that Iris carterorum is very similar to Iris wendelboi in the small size of the floral parts and the shape of the falls but can be distinguished by the yellow flowers, broader leaf bases, and narrow stylar branches having a more deeply lobed stigma. He suggests that they may prove to be geographic races of the same species that are separated by high mountains and a distance of 450 kilometers. B. Mathew & P. Wendelbo in Flora Iranica., 112: 68 (1975)
