---++ (SPEC) 'Fontanesii Latifolia' 1932, collected by Johnston *'Fontanesii Latifolia'* (Collected by [[Main.Bio.HybridizerJohnstonLaurence][Laurence Johnston]]) 60" (152 cm). Dark Blue. See below: * [[#References][References]] %SILVERBG% %IMAGEGALLERY{columns="5" limit="40" size="medium" titles="off"}% %ENDBG% --- ---+++ References: %TABLE{ sort="on" tableborder="0" cellpadding="14" cellspacing="3" cellborder="5" databg="#FAF0D4," headerrows="2" footerrows="1" tablewidth="100%" }% | Awaiting original catalog description | | Jean Stevens in The Iris and its Culture gives the following notes; "Latifolia also has narrower and longer foliage than tingitana or Fontanesii. The stem is very tall, reaching a height of 5 ft. when well grown, and is inclined to zigzag slightly from the widely spaced leaves. Unlike either tingitana or fontanesii, latifolia often carries a short side stem with a third flower. It is very late flowering, coming into bloom just before the English Iris, I. xiphioides, which flowers with me in early December [New Zealand]. The flowers have a rich velvet texture and particularly heavy substance. Seedlings vary little in colour, but are always some shade of deep, almost dark, violet, or very occassionally dark blue, with a gold signal patch. The standards are rounded at their tips, and are held at an angle of 45 degrees. With good culture it is easy to grow and it is, moreover, free flowering." Collected by Johnston, in High Atlas Mts.; Yr. Bk., I.S. (E.) 45. 1932; [[SpecTingitana][ _Iris tingitana_ Boiss. & Reuter]]." | --- %INCLUDE{"AdmSpecInsert"}% --- %COMMENT{ type="bottom"}% -- Main.RPries - 2010-01-11
