  • "In 1966, on the right Bank of the Kura river in the vicinity of the city of Mzcheta (Мцхета) I collected plants of narrow-leaved form I. pseudacorus. In the study of their ontogenesis in the Leningrad Botanical garden, it was possible to identify other significant differences between the plants of this population and the plants of a typical form. I emphasize that many distinctive features were found in the study of LIVING plants. In the study of only herbarium samples, this would be impossible.

Plants of this population of I. pseudacorus, penetrated into the territory of Caucasus in far away times, under the influence of arid conditions rather xerophilous. In the process of adaptive evolution that changed their structure and biology, that it made me highlight this race in a separate species -- I. mzchetica.

The main distinguishing feature of I. mzchetica are its thin, narrow leaves, their width usually does not exceed 12-18 mm, whereas in typical forms I. pseudacorus the width of the leaf blades varies usually in the range of 20-28 mm, sometimes reaching up to 35-40 mm. Significant differences in the internal structure of the leaf blades. The comparative analysis clearly shows that the air cavities in them not only different size, but also their configuration is completely different (figure 24).

They differ in appearance in I. mzchetica leaves are densely grass-green, whereas in typical forms of I. pseudacorus they are gray-green due to the abundance of wax coating. The vaginal part of leaves of the I. pseudacorus is light, almost white, in I. mzchetica it is green. Eye wich located at the top of the lower petals in the flowers I. pseudacorus is brighter and usually clearly framed by short strokes of dark veins. In the flowers of I. mzchetica eye painted poorly, it's borders are almost invisible, strokes of dark veins for the most part do not exist.

In our harsh Northern conditions I. mzchetica even when grown from seeds clearly retained its typical species characteristics. It's delicate graceful foliage and the flowers of pale yellow color give the bushes of this perennial a very elegant look. It can be used in hybridization programs of breeders.
