From AIS Bulletin #305 April 1997 Introducing POWDER BLUE GIANT - SPEC-cristata. Samuel Norris, 6", M. This selection of I. cristata was collected by Sam Norris 37 years ago from a 200 yard-long patch on a steep bank along a highway just west of Litchfield, KY. As its name suggests it is quite large (for a cristata anyway) - 3 1/2 inches across and a pale blue-violet self. It is deeply crested with white tops and deep yellow underneath. The signals are typical clean white with navy blue borders. Once planted - stand back! This iris is a grower. It will be shipped in 2-1/2" pots rather than bare root. $15.00. Joe Pye Weed's Garden. |
"Bloomstalk and flower as much as 6 1/2 " tall. The flattened flower is about 1" in height from the lowest fall to the highest standard, both flaring horizontally outward. The fall makes a radius of 1 1/2 " making a flower of 3 " in diameter. The standards are overall a light lavender with a slightly darker blush about midway up and around the midrib, and fading lighter to the base. The style arms similar in color with crests of 1/4" with a slightly toothed margin. The falls are 3/4" wide towards their end and with three prominent ridges making up the crest. The outer ridges are toothed marked with purple dashes at their white base turning to orange dashes in the throat. The central ridge is undulate not toothed and marked with yellow on the middle of the ridge. The crest and white signal area surrounded by a band of dark purple." --RRP as seen growing in Roxboro, NC. |
