Subgenus Scorpiris . Juno; Color Code-S2L or W9; Rootstock a well developed bulb 1 ½ cm in diameter with short, thickened fusiform roots; Stem completely hidden by leaves; Leaves almost the same width throughout till they narrow at the apex; Flora of USSR says this is distinguishable from Iris nicolai whose leaves begin narrowing about midway; Leaves are subfalcate with narrow more or less scabrous margins; lower leaves 2-3 cm broad; Flowers arise at the same time as leaves and are carried well above them on perianth tubes 9-10 cm long; Falls 4-5.5 cm long; haft unwinged with margins turned downward; blade 17-22 mm, dark violet, with a central ridge undissected with entire margins is dark violet changing to yellow at back; on both sides of the ridge it is white with dark violet spots; Standards down turned 2 ½-3 cm long by 6-12 mm broad, oblong-obovate to obovate-obtuse or often emarginate; style crests 5-10 by 15-22 mm obliquely triangular, subacute to obtuse, crenate-dentate; stigmas shortly semicircular.Sweet fragrance
