Nigel Service in A Guide to Species Irises, Their Identification and Cultivation, has Iris varbossiana as a synonym of I. germanica in its typical form, with a count of 2n=24 (p.26). |
Brian Mathew, The Iris (1981), p. 37 says "This is a little known plant, originating from Bosnia, and said by Hayek to be a variety of I. germanica." |
Appendix D of Garden Irises, published by AIS and edited by Fitz Randolph shows chromosome counts for the taxon: Simon 2n=24, and Randolph 2n=48. |
Kohlein, Iris, p. 205, says: "Pogon Iris from Bosnia; status undetermined. [...."] Grows to 30" (80 cm tall) [...] Sterile, according to Prodan". The work referenced is presumptively the translation of the work of Julius Prodan (1875-1959), edited by Bea Warburton and published in 1970 by the Median Iris Society as The Eupogon Iris Species, included in Kohlein's bibliography. |
