ALLUMEUSE —(Gage, 1938). This is the most gorgeous colored iris I have ever selected from my seed beds of many thousands. Its one fault is poor branching, but its glittering and brilliant color blending is so striking that this fault is overlooked when one sees the beauty of the flower itself. The standards are Wisteria Violet (blush) yellow at the base. The falls are semi-flaring, a blending of Pansy Violet (reddish) and Raisin Purple (reddish) with a golden orange beard. The substance is extra heavy with velvety texture. Large flowers of excellent form and free blooming. Strong grower and medium increaser. Midseason. 45 inches. $10.00. From Fairmount Gardens catalog, 1938/39: ALLUMEUSE (Gage 1938) The well domed standards of yellow blend into gold and pale wisteria violet at the base. The flaring falls are pansy violet with a golden orange flush extending down almost to the end of the beard. Styles gold and violet. Beard yellow and orange. A gleaming blend that is difficult to describe, but of most unusual beauty of form and color. 38 in. $10.00. |
