From Farr's catalog, 1913: ANNA FARR (Plic.). S. white, lightly bordered pale blue; F. pure white with pale blue marking at the base; immense flower with very large petals of great substance. Wide-spreading, horizontal falls producing an orchid-like effect. A distinct type. 3ft. No registration date. |
From AIS Bulletin No. 6, Oct. 1922. Brief: S. erect, cupped; F. drooping, wedge-shaped; markings at tip of S. and base of F. long, light hyssop violet; styles also; stalk high and well-branched; growth moderate; 3 ft. Details: Beard white, orange tipt; new foliage lush; segments usually broad. |
From R. S. Sturtevant, "Farr's Seedling Irises", AIS Bulletin 14, Jan. 1925: 16-17: A sort of myth has grown up about Anna Farr which, owing to its slow growth, has always been in great demand. One hears that another seedling has been substituted and sent out under the same name. I remember some years ago the question came up at a Directors meeting and we were asked whether such a substitution would be justified. We answered "Yes" without hesitation but Mr. Farr was doubtful--it seelmed against his sense of fairness--and I doubt whether it was ever done. It certainly had not been done previous to 1922 so that I look askance at all this talk of a true and a spurious Anna Farr. She is a fickle lady and perhaps partly because of her temperament is rated as the finest of the plicatas. She is at least lovely though I woo her in vain. [R. S. Sturtevant, "Farr's Seedling Irises", A.I.S. Bulletin 14 (Jan. 1925): 16-17.] |
From H. P. Simpson catalog, 1922: ANNA FARR (Plic.). S. white, lightly bordered pale blue; F. pure white with pale blue marking at the base; immense flower with very large petals of great substance. Wide-spreading, horizontal falls producing an orchid-like effect. A distinct type. 3ft. $1. |
From Robert Wayman, "Best Twenty-five Irises", The Flower Grower Oct 1925: 404. ANNA FARR is the finest of the plicata type, large white flower, with a delicate penciling of light lavender around the edges. Some folks report it as hard to grow. I have not found it so. |
