From AIS Bulletin #345 April 2007 Introducing BATTLESTAR ATLANTIS (Aitken '08) 42", 3 branches plus terminal with double sockets, a vigorous grower and a good clumper, large pure white flowers including beards, horns, spoons or flounces, great substance and color saturation. This ad is an experiment in advertising. Why run color on a pure white iris? Over the years, I have only been mildly interested in "spaceage" irises. Early efforts at hybridizing were usually associated with very narrow falls and lots of haft marks. Without the novelty protrusions, you ended up with a very ordinary iris. (See "ordinary" elsewhere in this issue.) Great strides have been made by several hybridizers to upgrade spaceagers to competitive modern standards. The time seems right for this plant. Overlapping falls with no haft marks, good substance and great vigor make this plant an acceptable introduction with or without the horns. Like many spaceagers, the horns are unstable. One year, you get spoons, the next may be fishing rod-like horns and sometimes flounces, sometimes all on the same flower! Each year is a stellar adventure. Sdlg #00T79: Got Milk x (Stellar Lights sibling x unknown (probably Skyhooks)). $50.00. Aitken's Salmon Crrek Garden. |
