From Koehler catalog, 1922: BELLADONNA. In Bulletin No. 3 of the American Iris Society (page 23), Mr. John C. Wister, president of the Society, admires this variety, calling it a “rather deep purplish blue Plicata, which was remarkable in flowering almost two weeks ahead of all other Plicatas, coming, in fact, earlier than the earliest Pallidas, such as Brionense. If an early strain of Plicatas can be developed to come in between the Germanicas and the Pallidas it will make a great addition to our gardens.” Belladonna blooms regularly and profusely. It is distinct in that its standards are darker than the falls, caused by a more heavy mottling and striping of purple on the white ground. An excellent and showy variety that has been greatly admired. $5 each.
From Bonnewitz catalog, 1927: BELLADONNA (Koehler). S. white spotted and veined blue-purple; F. white edged violet. Good flower, but small size. Midseason. Height, 27 to 33 inches $0.50
