'Black Hills' (Orville Fay, R. 1950) TB, 42" (107 cm). Midseason bloom. Blue-black (deep blue-violet) self, black beard. (Fay seedling# 47-21: 'Black Valor' x 'Gulf Stream') X 'Black Forest'. Fay 1951. High Commendation 1950 (under name); Honorable Mention 1951; Award of Merit 1954.

From Fay catalog, 1956: Black Hills (1951) 55.00 No. 49-21-47-21 X Black Forest. A blue black Iris as tall and as large as the best Irises in other color classes. This full-petaled, nicely proportioned, flaring and stylish blue black flower with a beard to match and no haft markings, is borne on a well-branched stalk 48 inches tall; 12 flowers on a main bloom stem. A fast increaser and vigorous grower. Mid-season. A very good parent. H.C. 1950; H.M. 1952; A.M. 1954; 100 Best 1955.
