1954, Songer

'Black Taffeta' (Gertrude Songer, R. 1953). TB, 28-30", Midseason bloom. Color Class-V1D, Deep-violet self (black-purple); beard and haft same. Purple based foliage at leaf base near rhizome (PBF). 'Black Forest' x Muhlestein seedling # 47-33 (sibling to 'Night Life'): ('Storm King' x 'Sable'). Tell 1954. Honorable Mention 1955; Judges Choice 1956; Award of Merit 1957.

From Fleur De Lis Gardens catalog 1956: BLACK TAFFETA (Songer 1954) M. L. 35 in. (Black Forest x Sib. to Night Life). An unusually rich, dark black purple self with a self colored beard. The form is excellent and it has broad, slightly ruffled petals and a glistening finish. One of the· best new blacks seen last year. H. M. 1955. 12.00.
