From AIS Bulletin #260 January 1986 Introducing BLOWTORCH (Byers 'S6) Sdlg. A-6-13: Entourage X Sky Hooks. TB, 36", EM-L. Bright yellow standards; white falls with yellow hafts and edges; orange beards with thick hairy blue flounces with tatters and curlicues of yellow radiating from along outer ends like flickering flames. Super well formed, heavily ruffled flowers with wide round horizontal falls. Substance like molded plastic. Good to excellent branching, 7 buds. Moderate vigor. Sometimes smells musky. $25.00. |
From Moonshine Gardens catalog, 1989: BLOWTORCH ( '86 Byers) 36" EM-L. S. yellow; F. white with yellow hafts and edges; tangerine-orange beards and blue flounces or horns. Very well formed heavily ruffled flowers with substance like molded plastic. This can produce fascinating, huge, thick, hairy blue flounces with tatters and curlicues of yellow petaloids radiating from along the outer edges like flickering flames. They're most likely to show from established, well grown plants but even when it just has horns or regular blue flounces most everyone that sees it seems to go zonkers over it! Voted one of the top favorite guests seen at the convention in Oklahoma last year and thrilled raves on it have been pouring in from all over the country, even coldest winter areas. Usually a much better grower and increaser than I thought it was going to prove to be, not a weed but not bad. Extremely fertile both ways and I'm going to have to use it more - with some of the best red bearded yellows and golds. $17.50 |
"Ah, Manley Osborne, look what you and your SKY HOOKS ('80) have done to the iris world! Even the "snobs" are paying attention now to the "Space Age" hybrids. The best of many nice ones viewed were from Monty Byers, a new hybridizer from Northern California. His first introduction, BLOWTORCH ('86) could be described as an improved, lighter version of SKY HOOKS."
