From Carl Salbach catalog, 1937: BRONZINO (Salbach 1937). Named forthe famous creator of bronzes, and this iris is so beautiful that even Bronzino himself would consider it a masterpiece. Tall, rich, and ideal in form and habit, Bronzino, a remarkable new iris, adds a splendid note of new color to the garden. Standards frosty golden bronze, falls rich coppery bronze - a color combination of great character and richness. Ideal low branching, leathery substance, domed standards, large flowers-in fact, Bronzino merits a ranking of "good" in every particular. A real standout. Mid-season. 40-inch. $15.00. |
Bronzino. My first year plant had 7 buds, 3 branches, although the wretched weather kept the plant stunted. The first branch was 15 inches from the ground. The falls hung straight I think, but I am waiting until next year to decide if they curled under a bit. The constant torrential rains and steady strong winds day after day always from the same direction, seemed to make no impression on the sturdy plant. Everyone who saw it was enthusiastic over it. Bronzino is a great old iris, widely known and loved, a bicolor, the golden bronze of the standards subtly blended into the coppery bronze of its falls. [Lila McCombs, Calif., "A Critical Evaluation of Older Iris", A.I.S. Bulletin 110 (July 1948): 55. |
