From Tell's 1951 catalog: M. ('Copper Lustre' x...) Light copper-tan that in some seasons is very bright, others dull. Should be a good parent with 'Tobacco Road', 'Aztec Copper', or other very wide and flaring iris. Schreiner's 1944 catalog: …the entire flower glows and glistens with a brilliant iridescence. In color, it is like a piece of highly polished brass or bronze.... the coloring is very smooth. There is no other iris like it. |
At Chancellor Kirkland's we saw Brown Thrasher, a new seedling which impresses one as having good possibilities. The flower stalk that we saw was on such a poorly grown clump that it was impossible to know whether the flower will have great merit or not. It appeared to be poorly grown by reason of its proximity to a large tree. I believe when grown under normal conditions it will be a very nice and worthwhile introduction. I thought the form to be better than 'Copper Lustre', of which it appears to be a derivative. [Frank E. Chowning, "1939 Iris Discoveries", A.I.S. Bulletin 75(December 1939): 12.] |
