From AIS Bulletin #265 April 1987 Introducing CHAMPAGNE ELEGANCE (Niswonger' 87) Sdlg. 23-81: Blyth H. 116-1: ((Magnetic Isle x Rhythm and Blues) x Snowlight) X (Coral Strand x Peach Spot). TB, 33" (84 cm), M. Sets seed reluctantly, pollen fertile. If you are a lover of pastels, as I am, you will enjoy this beauty with pale lavender-pink standards and light buffy apricot falls. A pale bicolor that is unusual with all the other good qualities. HC '86. $30.00. Cape Iris. |
From Moonshine Gardens catalog, 1989: CHAMPAGNE ELEGANCE ('87 Niswonger) 33" M. S. very pale lavender-pink; F. light silvery champagne (buffy apricot); amber beards. As of this writing there are a few stupendously superior irises, in my book, each that as I focus in on it would seem to be my numero uno top favorite. All of these are rebloomers, possessing such high quality and overall qualities that they would be "must-haves" even if they never rebloomed for anyone. Things like JENNIFER REBECCA, DESIGNER GOWN, WHITE REPRISE, LIGHT BEAM, ORANGE HARVEST, CORAL CHALICE, FOXY LADY, MANY HAPPY RETURNS and MOTHER EARTH, BREAKERS and BEST BET, HONEY GLAZED, AZURE GEM, LEPRECHAUN'S DELIGHT and RAINBOW SHERBERT, DITTO, not to mention a few of my own intros, but above all of these heartthrobs shimmers CHAMPAGNE ELEGANCE! A perfect iris in every single respect, consistently, and it has the most unique and delectable coloring that varies, always remaining a pastel vision of ultra loveliness! WOW!!! The standards were true powder blue here last spring, infused pink from the midribs. At Melrose in October of '87 they were white and last summer here they were a super pale lavender-pink. The falls and beards vary too - sometimes quite a bit of apricot and/or pink in the falls, sometimes practically none, it often has some blended gold at the hafts and the beards have gone from gold to amber, sometimes with some tangerine. From one rhizome planted in '87 it bloomed in the spring and then again during the summer unfazed by our 100°-105° heat (2 stalks in July and another in August). Rave RE reports are already pouring in from all over the country too, from Nebraska to New Mexico, even from England! Low pod fertility but I've found its pollen to be super potent! Hallelujah!! We've stocked tons more of this--anticipating tremendous demand. $16.50 |
