References:

From Cooley's catalog, 1952: CITY OF LINCOLN* (H. Sass, 1936) Brightest, largest, and surely the finest of all true variegatas. Clear golden yellow standards, broad, fiery red falls, startling in their contrast. When well grown on an established plant it is unbeatable. Each 50c; 3 for $1.25. HM AIS, 1937; AM, 1939.
From Schreiner's Catalog, 1941: CITY OF LINCOLN. King of the variegatas! The variegata by which all others are judged. This superb iris, achieved after many years work by the famous Sass Brothers, possesses rich golden standards and bright velvety red falls. City of Lincoln possesses fine height, excellent branching, splendid flaring form and equals most of the newer irises in size
City of Lincoln: (H. Sass). Clean cut variegata-tall, fairly well branched, flower well shaped but not striking-fairly large, clear golden standards and reddish falls showing yellow edging, haft heavily veined. Must see again before can become enamored. [Belsley, Ray J. (1939), Varietal Comments. Bulletin of the American Iris Society 074(July), 15.]
From Adamgrove catalog, 1997: CITY OF LINCOLN (H.P. Sass, 1936) The 1939 Checklist, in its inimitably terse manner, describes this as "Y9D", which translates to yellow standards and red falls. Hardly a bambumer of a description, but the iris--well, bambumer is the term. The vibrancy of the yellow-gold standards, the intensity of the dark red falls, set the iris world afire. $5.00. AM 39.
