'Cottage Maid' (Barr and Sons, 1906) TB. Early midseason bloom. Color Class-B3M. Lavender-blue ground, falls veined and washed deeper purple with a golden beard.

From Melrose Gardens catalog, 1958: COTTAGE MAID (Barr). Here is an example of how some of the old ones turn up. Mrs. S.O. Scudder [Novato, CA] was the last to list this iris, according to the check list and she had her gardens here in Northern California. This was in 1933, but there is still a little of this iris around, although the name was declared obsolete and given to Mr. Gersdorff for one of his seedlings in 1938. A little blue bitone with white veining in the falls.

Note: Charming and floriferous. Short for a TB by modern standards. Listed as "obsolete" in 1939 AIS Checklist, but still around.

Cottage Maid (Listed by Barr in 1906)

Color effect a silvery blue, boldly veined with violet, bicolor; size good; form short, open, rounded; flowering habit free; tall bearded class; height 24 in.; branching fastigiate to wider, 3 laterals. A flower of good substance; firm texture; crêped surface; fair fragrance; good lasting quality. A clean-colored, interesting cut flower, useful in any position.

S. pale hortense violet; carriage cupped, erect to arching; blade obovate, notched, undulate, ruffled and frilled; size 1½ in. wide, 2 in. long. F. with amethyst-violet veins on a pale lavender-white ground, finere and redder reticulations on the base of the blade and haft, more closely spaced; carriage flaring; wedge-shaped, oblong, obcordate; smooth; size 1½ in. wide, 2 in. long. Minor parts: beard fine, dense, projecting, bluish tipped with yellow; haft broad, channeled; reticulations fine to broad, widely spaced; style-branches narrow, overarching, pale violet; crest small, fringed; pollen plentiful; spathe valves green, one-half scarious, inflated. rowth moderate to vigorous; increase rapid; habit regular; foliage lax, leaves slender, deep green; 2-4 blooms open at once, floriferous; stalk erect, with 13 buds.

An iris neglecta type. Its veining, and the contrast in tints and shades of the same color, are interesting.
