From Fairmount Gardens catalog, 1946: DOWN EAST (Tobie 1943) M. One of the darkest and yet glowing purple iris that I have seen. It is a self of anthracene purple with the falls seeming darker on account of their extreme velvety surface. The domed standards are broad and full. The falls are semi-flaring of very velvety finish with the solid color going down into the throat. The beard is purple tinted bronze. A deep but brilliant iris of good substance, sturdy stalks and good branching.H. M., A I. S. 1943. R. 90 1944. 37". $9.00. |
