References:

From Campos Altos catalog, 1924: ESPLENDIDO (Mesopotamica X Parisiana). A flne big red-purple bicolor with such beautifully branched stems that its garden effect is striking. As “Seedling 44“ it was much coveted last season in the garden $5.00
From Bonnewitz catalog, 1927: ESPLENDIDO (Mohr). S. violet-mauve; F. deeper with red-brown markings on cream base; orange beard. Large bloom of good shape. Height, 36 inches. You will notice that this is one of the new varieties from California. It increases slowly and may remain high in price for some time. $5.00.

From The Flower Grower, Vol. 12, No. 12(December 1925): 497. Esplendido was secured from Campos Altos last July and I did not see it offered anywhere this season except by Salbach. Four large growers visited this spring did not have it or apparently any line of it. This California introduction is evidently perfectly hardy in Northern Indiana, and appears to be a strong grower. The flower is fully the equal of 'Lent A. Williamson' in size and substance, of fine shape and redder in color, giving a very beautiful effect in certain lights. The stem is especially well branched. As compared with 'Williamson', 'Prospero', 'Alcazar', 'Titan', 'Canopus', etc., it is quite different and altogether desirable. E. G. Lapham (Ind.)
