From Tell’s Iris Gardens catalog,1959: FIRE CHIEF (Dr. Frank B. Galyon, Knoxville,Tenn.) Midseason-Late. 38 to 46 inches. (Gypsy x Louise Blake). This brilliant, clean variegata has received the highest praise from discriminating A.I.S. judges all over the country. Mrs. Leo Reynolds (Serlena) of "Haven" fame wrote: "I understand you will introduce FIRE CHIEF, Dr. Galyon's great variegata. It is, without doubt, outstanding in its color class." So well have the judges liked it that it has twice won the H. C. award--once under number and in 1958 under its name. The standards are brilliant yellow, the falls are a rich self without the border so often associated with this color class. The contrast is striking and harmonious. Branching here was surprisingly good on first year plants, although the branching does vary. Will pod with difficulty, however, has fertile pollen. FIRE CHIEF should breed excellent variegatas and amoenas. $25.00
"While visiting in Utah in 1957, Dr. Frank B. Galyon of Knoxville, Tennessee came by for a visit. Later I was privileged to grow FIRE CHIEF the superb variegata which I am now introducing for him. So well did the judges of the A.I.S. like this flower that it won two Highly Commended awards, once under number and in 1958 under its registered name. Being a half sister to Mrs. Crosby's own ON PARADE these two should produce excellent variegatas if crossed and perhaps some fine amoeanas and neglectas as well. Another great iris and a first introduction." Tell's Iris Gardens.
