1939, Wiesner

'Gallant Leader' (Joseph Wiesner, R. 1936), TB. 40" Very late bloom. Color Class S9D. Standards deep rose-red; falls deep velvety maroon blending to brown at the hafts. ('Morning Splendor' x 'Germaine Perthuis') x 'Député Nomblot'. Strong fragrance. Nesmith 1939. Honorable Mention 1939.

From Fairmount Gardens catalog, 1942: "The standards are deep rose-red heavily infused with gold, fluted and well arched. The Falls are semi-flating of deep velvety maroon blending into rich brown at the very broad hafts. Beard are burnished gold. This iris has great resistanced to bad weather in spite of its great size of flower. Fine branching."
From 1946 Cooley's Catalog: "GALLANT LEADER (Wiesner, 1939) Each $1.50; 3 for $4.00 Broad and well-arched standards of deep rose-red; falls velvety maroon touched with coppery gold, especially at the haft. A flower of staggering size, impressive in its richness and regal carriage. HM AIS, 1939."
