From Sass catalog, 1949: GARDEN FLAME (H. P. Sass, 1943)-A broad petaled dark red self. Stems 34 inches tall. Ranks with the top among reds. $1.50
"Garden Flame (H. P. Sass '41) is still a favorite red. It is a pure self of rich garnet red with wide petals and flaring form. It is an iris of very high quality and great garden value." David R. Kinnish, O. S. B., (Kansas), “In Kansas, Missouri and Illinois,” The Bulletin of the American Iris Society, No. 107, “Iris Ramblings” (October 1947): 41.
GARDEN FLAME (H. P. Sass, 1941) - Rich garnet self with a little orange influence; flower somewhat lacking as to clearness, large; standards and falls broad, falls flaring, stalk rather short, branching not good; plant not a vigorous grower with us. [Elis Nelson, "Varietal Notes on Red Irises," The Bulletin of the American Iris Society, No. 110 (July 1948): 93.]
From Marble Iris Gardens catalog, 1957: GARDEN FLAME (Sass 1941) M.L. 34 in. A very definite rose toned variety with deep tints of rose and brown in the center. The color is delightfully pleasing and the rounded blooms make this one of the finest Iris that we grow. We recommend it. Each 60c, 3 for $1.50.
