From Quality Gardens catalog 1931: INDIAN CHIEF (Ayres 1929) M. 40" S.F. This is one of the finest red Iris in existence. S. beautiful violet red, F. deep rich glowing velvety red. A wonderfully fine color. The plant is most strong and vigorous. We consider this variety one of the outstanding Iris in our collection. It is hardy and a free bloomer and a garden clump is a beautiful sight. $10.00.
INDIAN CHIEF. Well named, for while classed as one of our superior reds, it carries a bronzy overcast, being regarded by some critics as a red blend. At any rate, INDIAN CHIEF is one of the most popular of the newer things, and a credit to Doctor Ayres, its introducer. A stalk of this was exhibited at the Boston show, and was one of the most talked of irises in the entire display. The velvety falls are deep blood-red, blended with bronze, and the standards are considerably lighter in tone. A large flower, quite tall, and very well branched. Each $5.00; three for $12.00.
