(TB) 'Indigo Bunting'
1934, Ayres
'Indigo Bunting' (
Dr. W. M. Ayres, R. 1931) TB. Midseason bloom. Color Class-B1D.
'Souv. De Mme Gaudichau' X (
'Loute' x
I. mesopotamica). Ayers 1934. Introduced by Schreiner 1934.
A description from one catalog describes it as an entrancing shade of blue like that of the bird for which it is named (Whiting, 1937). It is mentioned that it has excellent substance, form and branching. Roy Ashley, owner of Aravista Gardens describes it in his 1937 catalog as a "better Mme. Gaudichau" and an exceptional doer of unusual carrying quality. Fairmount Gardens in 1938 lists it as having dark blue standards with semi-flaring falls in a deep velvety blue.
In the Report of Judges section of A.I.S. Bulletin Vol. #60 it reads, "A great disappointment not approaching that bright blue bird's coat in color. It was a blue with considerable purple in it as I saw it, a smallish flower most nearly like 'Naronda' which, however, was a bit darker, bluer, much larger and more nearly a self with better form and branching." Obviously the judge writing this critique was not overly impressed with its color.
In 1934 Schreiner's introduced 'Indigo Bunting' in their Iris Lover's Catalog:
