Comment from Judy Schneider: 'Ione Morgan' is the one we've had the great debate about this year. There are apparently two cultivars in circulation with that name. Before the HIPS sale, we had a person that was growing the one with the pre-existing picture on the Wiki contact us about the one we had listed in the sale. After much research and background checking, it was determined by the "experts" that the one I have that came from Superstition is the real 'Ione Morgan'. It is also the same as the one Bruce Filardi has grown for years that was vetted by Phil Edinger, Gesine Lohr and Jean Richter. I will say it varies greatly from year to year in the fall color. Sometimes it's more orange and other times it's more red. Sure wish there was an easily used DNA test for irises. Would sure solve a lot of these problems! September 2016 |
Comment from Mary Hess: Thanks for letting me know about this discussion. Mine is the same as what Superstition has according to my notes. Photo attached. Don't have any record of where mine came from. It just bloomed in my yard one year. To be honest, I think the photo from Wilson Banner matches the description better than any of the others and I'd be hard put to say it is the same as the others. I wonder if Wilson Banner has any other photos taken different years. Their photo shows a tiny white spear at the end of the beard that none of the others show and the base color around the beard appears white while the others appear pale yellow. The width of the rim seems much wider in all the other photos as compared to the Wilson one. Possibly minor details to be sure but sometimes that is all the difference. September 2016. |
