| K. V. AYRES (Ayres 1932) M. 42". A huge flower whose coloring is the despair of the descriptionist. A soft coffee color, tinged lavender and cream with a lustrous pink overglow. The stalk is very tall and the symmetrical flowers are large and well placed on the widely branched stems. A very strong grower and heavy bloomer. $3.00 H.M., A.l.S., 1933. [1937 Quality Gardens catalog, Freeport, IL] From 1935 Grant Gardens catalog (Louisville, Kentucky): K. V. Ayres. Soft lavender pink and blue blend with grey tinge lighted up by very rich gold beard. 45 inches. E.M. $15.00 From AIS Bulletin No. 42 (Jan 1932); "Poor Judges" by Ethel Anson Peckham: Ayres had also an exquisite pale blend of light coffee tones lit with a yellow gleam. The edges of the petals have a slightly fringed effect and the flower is a "tall-shaped" one, very large and graceful with broad, strong foliage and a rampant vigor of growth. This has been named after Mrs. Ayres (K. V. AYRES), and is one of the loveliest irises I have seen but it is more of an exhibition variety than a garden subject as the color is too quiet to "carry" well. |
