(TB) 'Lake George'

1945, Smith

'Lake George' ( Kenneth D. Smith, R.1943). TB. Midseason/Late bloom. Color code-B1M. Probably from 'Madame Ullman'.

LAKE GEORGE (K. Smith 1945) M. L. An iris that is well named for the color reminds one of the clear blue water of this beautiful lake. A self of soft blue violet (nearest color in Ridgway) shading darker at the hafts. The slightly ruffled standards are broad and roundly domed. The falls are very flaring and firm with no color other than blue showing on the hafts. Styles same color, beard light yellow tipped blue at the end. The garden effect is a smoothly finished blue with trim flaring form that at once attracts attention. This iris has been given high praise on the Pacific coast. Clean foliage and good branching. H. C., A. I. S. 1944. R.92, 1944. 39 in. Net $25.00. [Mrs. Thomas Nesmith, Fairmount Gardens Catalog, Lowell, Massachusetts, Introductions for 1945.]

LAKE GEORGE (Smith, R., 1945): Is the most impressive new iris I saw this year. It was extremely tall, very large, had unusually heavy substance and fair branching. Its form was similar to Tobacco Road with almost horizontal falls, and holds up well in sun and wind. It is a rich, clear, medium blue self with slightly deeper blue veining which does not detract. It increased normally. (Mrs. H. M. Muse, Texas).; Good medium blue, strong grower, stalks tall, well branched. A fine iris. (Calif.). [“Varietal Comments” The Bulletin of the American Iris Society, No. 103, (October 1946): 61.]
