From Longfield Iris Farm catalog, 1925: Lent A. Williamson (Williamson 1918). (Amas X ?). Tall Bearded. Early midseason. Standards very broad, lavender violet; falls broad and drooping, velvety violet purple. The whole flower suffused yellow, more heavily toward the center. Beard yellow. Large flowers of exceptional substance on stout stems three and one-half feet high. Extremely vigorous in growth. This Iris, our origination, has been a standard of comparison since its introduction. $1.00.
From Cornell 112: Color effect a lavender-violet, velvety royal purple bicolor, veined. Standards lavender-violet, bronzed at claw. falls velvety cotinga purple, bronzed and veined on wide outer haft, yellow along the showy, orange beard. This sort is strong in growth and vigorous in production; it has broad, stiff foliage, and heavy stalks and flowers. Its large flowers are noteworthy. Rating 90. 'Amas' x unknown.
From H. P. Simpson catalog, 1922: L. A. WILLIAMSON (Williamson, 1918) — S. soft campanula-violet; F. velvety royal-purple; brilliant golden beard. Massive in flower and growth. Said by some to be one of the finest in the world. 36-42-inch. Not for sale.
From Robert Wayman, "Best Twenty-five Irises", The Flower Grower, Oct 1925: LENT A.WILLIAMSON: This variety was given the highest rating of 96 by the American Iris Society Jurors in 1922. My own opinion is that while it is a fine flower, Ambassadeur should have been rated ahead of it.

  • An all time great iris. Still commands attention in any modern iris garden. Far ahead of its time. -- WikiGuest - 19 Nov 2020
