Louvois, which is our only velvety brown iris, no longer rated either list of 100 best irises. It remains as distinctive and attractive an iris as anyone could hope for. It has dull medium brown standards, and the falls are rich velvety mahogany brown, edged with the color of the standards. Galyon, F. (1952). “Dark horses” of irisdom. Bulletin of the American Iris Society, 126, 22.
From Cooley's 1940 catalog: "Brown, deep, rich and velvety, like the lustrous fur of an animal. This new French sort has been one of the surprises of the past two years. Standards are a decided brown tone, the falls exceedingly dark brown, edged to match the standards."
Outstanding deep red-brown bicolor; the falls are nicely edged with the lighter shade. Low. [Douglas, Geddes (1942). More Variety Comments, 1942. American Iris Society Bulletin, 88<(January 1943), 63.]
Louvois is an iris to remember. The peaked standards are milk chocolate, the falls rich, bitter chocolate with a wide border of the milk chocolate around the edges. The sun on the falls transforms them to the crimson velvet of a medieval wall hanging. [Lila McCombs, “A Critical Evaluation of Older Irises”, The Bulletin of the American Iris Society, No. 110 (July 1948): 58.]
