From Quality Gardens catalog 1931: MARY ELIZABETH (Kirkland 1929) L. 40". A large, well formed flower of most attractive coloring. The various colors in the petals and style arms seem combined into one harmonious whole of rosy brilliance, with darker velvety falls. A beautiful prominent beard. A flower of rare beauty and grace. One of the finest introductions of recent years and we strongly recommend it to our customers. (Stock limited.) $20.00. |
From Longfield iris Farm catalog, 1934: Mary Elizabeth (83) (Kirk. 1929). A brilliant rosy red self. S. and F. same shade but the heavy velvety quality of the falls give it the effect of a hicolor. Golden beard. Thirty-eight inches. $4.00. |

MARY ELIZABETH- Another of his old ones. Standards pale gold with pink sheen. Falls strawberry red. Not a particularly good form, but can be seen a mile off. Well branched. 36". N.B.[take note] I was attracted to both these varieties (Morning Glory, Mary Elizabeth) in public and private planting (having seen them previously in the Chancellor's garden) and at once recognized them when close to.
