From Fleur De Lis catalog, 1956: MATTIE GATES (Sass 1946) M. 36 in. (Golden Fleece x similar type sdlg.). The most brilliant of the white and gold combos, this has a pure white fall heavily bordered with bright lemon gold and lemon gold standards. Mattie Gates (Sass)—a very bright lemon yellow with the cleanest haft I have noted on a yellow iris. I do realize that Marion Vaughn and Mattie Gates are very similar, and if one could decide which is better, only that one would be absolutely necessary; otherwise, both varieties add to a discriminating collection. "Mattie Gates was a beautiful thing in bright lemon yellow and white. It had one fault if you can call it a fault—it was so loaded with bloom I wondered if it could possibly have enough increase to live."
