Apropos Of Excellence. It began in mid-April, with the scent of orange blossoms-a look at the broad-falled creations of Sanford Babson, surrounded by his citrus groves. First, I reaffirmed my memory of R10-16 as the plicata (now named ODYSSEY). It is a "long voyage of adventure" into the future of irises-falls so broad and straight from the shoulders that they touch for almost their entire length, and form a flaring saucer of clean white background for the precision placement of the deep violet markings. The blooms have domed standards of the widest of petals, have thick substance like china, and occur on strong, widely branched stalks. This Odyssey, like the Greek one, will take a long time to "reach home", for it is a slow increaser, but what a future classic to await. [Elsie Mae Nicholson, “The Rainbow Trail in California---1969,” The Bulletin of the American Iris Society, No. 194 (July 1969): 20.]
ODYSSEY has the broadest falls of any plic and possibly of any other iris. Lighter in color than the above two, its form is its strongest point. [Mullin, Ron (1971). Irises I Like, American Iris Society Bulletin 204(January 1972), 13.]
