'Paint It Black' (Schreiner, R. 1994). Seedling# AA 414-B. TB, 36" (91 cm), Late midseason bloom. Standards deep reddish purple (RHS 79A); falls blackish purple (202A); beards black; ruffled. Seedling# V 94-2: ('Black Dragon' x seedling# R 167-A: ((seedling# W 1107-BB: (('Dark Boatman' x seedling# N 364-1) x 'Black Swan') x seedling# D 232-3, 'Navy Strut' sibling) x 'Storm Flurry')) X seedling# N 273-A, 'Back In Black' sibling. Schreiner 1994. Honorable Mention 1996; Award of Merit 2000.

Hardiness Zones 4-8 for most varieties, Some cultivars tolerate colder, others tolerate warmer zones (please comment in comment box with your location if this cultivar grows well in zone 3, 4, 9, or 10.)
Exposure Prefers full sun for optimal performance, may still bloom in half-day shade
Water: Prefers well drained good garden soil, Tolerant of dry conditions in established plants, Intolerant of swampy conditions.
