From Sass Iris List 1949, Maple Road Garden: PRETTY PANSY (46-114) (Sass Brothers, 1949) A purple and white of Moonlit Sea type without the yellow. 36-inch stems. $15.00.
From Fleur De Lis catalog, 1956: PRETTY PANSY (Sass 1949) M. 37 in.(Thought to be from B. Gersdorff x Moonlit Sea). Somewhat on the Moonlit Sea type, this has a white ground but is so heavily striated with purple that little of the white shows through except as a blaze on the falls and the base of the standards and in the throat. Very lovely. H. M. 1950. 2.00
But to get back to Sass's iris garden. The first thing I saw and fell in love with was Pretty Pansy. I don't know if it would be classed as a "fancy" or not but I was very much taken with it. And it was the most "different" pretty iris I ever saw. Then we tramped and we tramped and saw probably a hundred more or less like it. By that time I was fed up on the type. I still like it, though, and some day I am going to get it and plant it where it will make a clump with a shrubbery back- ground and I think it will be breathtaking. From Edenwald Gardens catalog for 1958: PRETTY PANSY -Chalk-white undercolor so heavily striated with purple that little of the white shows through, except throughout the center in stunning contrast.
