From Contemporary Gardens catalog, 1980: PRIDE OF OKLAHOMA - TB, 32" (80 cm), Early-Midseason. A very important addition to the red class, in that it is the first red to bloom. Solid rich red self with absolutely smooth hafts and no white area around the brown beard. Large flowers are very well formed with closed standards and lightly ruffled, flaring falls. well spaced stalks have 2 branches plus spur, 7 buds. Healthy plants, but unfortunately a slow to moderate increaser for us most years. Sdlg. C-6: (Gala Madrid X Fireball). EC 1975 and 1978. $25.00 |
On Sunday we made our sixth trip to the master guest plantings, and there saw another winner whose top bud was being opened by its hybridizer, Perry Dyer. It was PRIDE OF OKLAHOMA, a rich brown with no haft marks which if performing on schedule must have given TWIST OF FATE, Presidents Cup winner, a run for its money.
