From Carl Salbach catalog 1936: Radiant (Salbach 1936). A "little giant," as bright in comparison to other iris of today as King Midas was rich among the iris available when it was first released. Standards of burnished golden bronze, and broad falls of glowing coppery-red, as brilliant a combination as we have ever seen. All rhizomes for this season sold out during the blooming Reason at $25.00 each and we do not expect to be able to offer more than one to a customer next season. |
RADIANT is such an unusual color in the garden that it should be planted with care as to its companions, even though iris colors never really clash, but only detract from each other. [Reports of Region Vice-Presdidents, A.I.S. Bulletin 88:20 Jan. 1943] |

This brings us to the reds. Here I would want again 'CHEERIO' (22), as a red bicolor; 'CHRISTABEL' (23), as a red self, and RADIANT (24), as an orange and copper bicolor. CHEERIO has most of its color in the falls, but these are very red. I am still inclined to think that CHRISTABEL is the best all-round red. RADIANT well deserves its name. While it is not large or tall, it is the best of its color at its price. Wills, Jesse, (1943). Older Iris I Would Buy Again, American Iris Society Bulletin, 89 (April 1943), 16. |
