ORIGINAL CATALOG DESCRIPTION:
DOUBLE MAJESTY and RETURN ENGAGEMENT, his first commercial releases, were introduced by the Avonbank Gardens, Radford, Virginia, in 1965. These fancy plicatas in the red range were seen in full clump by the writer on October 16, 1965, in the hybridizer's garden. They are somewhat similar, though definitely different. DOUBLE MAJESTY could even be said to grow oversize in this garden. It is just simply that big. Its flaring form is nice. RETURN ENGAGEMENT (PINK CAMEO X OCTOBER BLAZE) is distinguishable by its greater floriferousness and its infusion of brownish color. Another red plicata was unfurling its maiden bloom on that day at the age of five and one-half months. A taller, bolder, better branched stalk would be hard to find among the reds anywhere. In addition to the fancy striations radiating out on to the falls, it had a broad cream midrib coming down from a perfectly delineated crossbar at the haft. It was a wonderful experience to watch the hybridizer as the terminal bud progressed in its revelation of what the blossom looked like. [Billy G.
