'Sapphire Fuzz' (O. David Niswonger, R. 1966). Seedling# 10-63. TB, 32" (81 cm), Midseason bloom. Color Class-B1L, Light blue self, slightly ruffled; dark blue beard. 'Lady Blue Beard' X 'Marriott'. Cape Iris 1967. Honorable Mention 1968.

This was one of Dave Niswonger's first introductions.

From AIS Bulletin #185 April 1967 Introducing SAPPHIRE Fuzz. sdlg. 10-63. LADY BLUEBEARD X MARRIOTT. Midseason. TB. 32". BIL. Fertile both ways (sometimes skimpy on pollen). Out of several hundred seedlings involving nine crosses of the best known blue bearded inses, this was the best blue bearded seedling. It is a clear light blue self (no haft markings), with slightly ruffled, semiflaring falls and domed, overlapping standards. The vivid blue beard makes it distinctive. The substance is heavy, with blooms lasting three and somctimes four days. It takes the wind and rain and therefore doesn't need to be staked. This iris won the Charles H. Lewis Memorial Award from the Greater Kansas City Iris Society for the most popular seedling in the Region 18 Test Garden in 1966. $25.00. Cape Iris Gardens.
