1999 , Keppel

'Sea Power' (Keith Keppel, R. 1998). Seedling 93-89B. TB, 38" (97 cm), Midseason bloom. Standards cornflower to campanula blue (M&P 42-10-E), paling to light chicory blue (42-B-7) toward edge; style arms cornflower to campanula blue; falls commodore blue (43-F-12), paling slightly toward edge, slight tan haft suffusion; beards blue white at end, light lemon in throat; heavily ruffled; pronounced sweet fragrance. 'Yaquina Blue' X 'Jazz Me Blue'. Keppel 1999. High Commendation 1998; Honorable Mention 2001; Award of Merit 2003; Wister Medal 2005; American Dykes Medal 2006, Nelson Award 2009.

From AIS Bulletin #312 January 1999 Introducing SEA POWER (Keppel) TB, M 38" (Yaquina Blue X Jazz Me Blue) Cornflower to campanula blue, paling to light chicory blue at margins which then accentuates the heavy ruffling. Voted favorite seedling at 1998 Region 13 spring meet. #93-89B. $50.00. Keith Keppel.

Water: Prefers well drained good garden soil, Tolerant of dry conditions in established plants, Intolerant of swampy conditions.
PH Prefers Neutral to basic solis 6.1 to 8.5, quite toleranr of more extreme conditions
Fertilizer Prefers rich conditions on relatively inorganic soils.

  • 'Sea Power' is not true blue (or turquoise, as some of the photos above show). It is a nice blue, but don't be disappointed if you were looking for cobalt blue. There are no turquoise or warm blue tall bearded irises. -- ReneeFraser - 2016-10-02
