From Cooley's catalog, 1939: STAINED GLASS - A copper red self, one of the most brilliant iris we have ever seen when viewed with the sun behind it. In such a light it resembles nothing guite so much as stained glass . . . rich, glowing, almost aflame! Make no mistake, this is not a red iris, but a solid copper of a reddish tone, the same all over except for the bronze yellow beard. Shown in the Chicago exhibit in 1938, it was given the AIS award of Highly Commended. It is the second iris so honored to be introduced by us, Modiste having won the laurels the previous year.
From Fairmount Gardens catalog, 1942: STAINED GLASS (Wilhelm 1939) M. In sunlight this copper red self is suffused with the rich glowing ruddy tones that we see in the glass of old Cathedral windows. This sturdy variety is given further brilliance by the heavy bronze yellow beard. H. C., A. I. S. 1938. H. M., A. I. S. 1940. Per. R. 87 1941. 36 in. $2.00

Stained Glass should always be planted in full sun for best effect of its sumptuous coloring of red-copper. It has fine form with very wide, drooping falls. [Lila McCombs, “A Critical Evaluation of Older Irises”, The Bulletin of the American Iris Society, No. 110 (July 1948): 60.]
