Color Class B1DD, Deep red-black self with lighter area at base of midribs; clean brownish hafts; velvety finish; beard brown tipped blue-violet. ('Duke Of Burgundy' x 'Edenite') X 'Congo Song'. Eden Road 1968. Favorite Guest 1968; Honorable Mention 1969; Award of Merit 1973.

From 1968 Eden Road catalog: STUDY IN BLACK (Plough '68) EM 36 in. No. 62-96-25. (Duke of Burgundy x Edenite) X Congo Song. Deep red black that stands stately and tall. There is a lighter area at base of midrib on standards. Falls have clean brownish hafts. Form is nearly horizontally flaring. Velvety finish. Beard is brown tipped blue-violet. Four branches and terminal. Pod fertile. $25
Red-black irises in the tradition of 'EDENITE' continue to get better. STUDY IN BLACK barely missed an AM this year[1971]. The smooth coloring, three open blooms, and sturdy stalks with fine branching, will probably win that award for it next year. The flowers are lightly ruffled and heavily substanced.
